I'm going to go out on a limb here:
Cuba City and Potosi have a pretty good batch of female athletes running through their schools right now.
Volleyball, softball, basketball ... The Cubans and Chieftains are at it again. Both won sectional semifinals Thursday night, and will play to go to state on Saturday: Cuba City vs. Markesan at 2 in Reedsburg, and Potosi vs. Eleva-Strum at 7 in La Crosse.
Cuba City 43, Lancaster 35
What an amazing game at Richland Center HS, and I'm glad I have this blog because there are so many things I wanted to write in my game story but didn't have room for.
Hats off to the young Flying Arrows, who had the Cubans on the ropes the entire night. This game was still very much in doubt in the final 3 minutes, and that hasn't happened to Cuba City very often the last couple years.
Abby Noble's performance defies description. Calling it gutty would be an insult. Playing with a huge brace that is in place to stabilize her injured ACL, Noble played a ton of minutes, and while she didn't score a lot, just her presence on the court was crucial for Lancaster. Not to mention the handful of times she banged the knee, fall on it awkwardly, etc., yet every time came back into the game. Unbelievable. What a tough, tough girl.
As for Cuba City, it sure pays to have kids who have been down the tournament trail before. Even when they trailed by 10, the Cubans never looked rattled. If they were - and Kelsey Pustina did admit she was concerned by halftime - they didn't show it.
And that defensive performance in the third quarter, when they erased their deficit, was incredible. Cuba City had Lancaster absolutely locked up with no escape routes.
I won't tell you who, because he probably wouldn't want me to, but someone who would know told me he expects Cuba City to handle Markesan (again) Saturday night.
Potosi 44, Barneveld 37
Obviously I was in RC at the Cuba City game, but colleague Michael Schmidt covered this one for us. An impressive win over a top-notch Barneveld program, and the deep and talented Chieftains are 1 victory from Madison.
I see the Black Hawk girls are also in the Division 4 sectional finals. Wouldn't it be awesome if Potosi and Black Hawk kept winning and met in a Six Rivers Challenge game for the state championship? Remember, Black Hawk gave Potosi 1 of its 2 losses this season, 47-43, way back on Dec. 7.

Lancaster showed tremendous grit and determination. They outplayed Cuba City for 28 minutes of this game. Their defense was very impressive and forced Cuba City to shoot from the outside (which just wouldn't drop!). Not to mention if the game had gone into OT, CC would have been shaking without Brianna Kaiser. Brett Rollins is one of the top girls coaches in the state and always gives Pustina everything he can handle. Not to mention the two seem to get along quite well and are first to give the other team credit. Two great coaches who, in my opinion, meet too early.
Cuba City got lucky, hopefully they can handle Markesan a little bit better but who knows. Lancaster gave our girls a wake-up call which will help. I'd like to know who your source is Erin! What is this? The Watergate!? :D
